TITLE:                           Custodian

FLSA STATUS:               Non-Exempt

HOURS:                                    15

 

REQUIREMENTS FOR ALL EMPLOYEES:

  1. Ability to work effectively with staff, patrons, and others.
  2. Ability to work in a changing and varied environment and with frequent interruptions.
  3. Ability to communicate clearly.
  4. Ability to use various technologies to complete work.
  5. Ability to follow library policies and procedures.
  6. Ability to work independently and productively.

POSITION SUMMARY:
General cleaning and maintenance of the library building and grounds according to general safety standards. The custodian conducts routine mechanical maintenance checks and performs some light repair and carpentry work.  The custodian reports to the library director.

REQUIREMENTS FOR THIS POSITION:

  1. Ability to work in all weather conditions
  2. Ability to read instructions and follow directions
  3. Ability to climb, balance, stoop, reach, kneel, crouch, crawl, push, and pull
  4. Ability to climb a 12-foot ladder
  5. Ability to undertand the effects of harmful chemicals
  6. Ability to comply with building and grounds safety according to the regulations of the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA)
  7. Ability to attend building committee meetings, training classes, and other meetings as necessary.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  1. Cleaning the library daily indoors and outdoors (picking up trash, cleaning walkways, outside stairs, computer screens & keyboards, bathrooms, vacuuming, cleaning hardwood floors, dusting, cleaning staff work areas, cleaning windows and doors, etc);
  2. Bringing in returned library materials from the outside drop box;
  3. Ordering maintenance supplies up to $500;
  4. Maintaining floor drains in bathrooms and boiler room;
  5. Setting up and cleaning up for library programs, including hanging banners at the front door, moving furniture, and hanging exhibit/program/seasonal decoration;
  6. Placing garbage and recycling outside for pickup;
  7. Adjusting heating and cooling of the library building;
  8. Performing routine building maintenance and minor repairs;
  9. Reporting major/emergency repair work needed immediately to library director;
  10. Maintaining the library grounds including weeding, pruning, raking, snow and ice removal, salting, and seasonal clean up.
  11. Assisting the library director in contacting companies for routine safety, security checks, and maintenance of the library (elevator, air conditioning, boiler, fire safety);
  12. Performs other duties as needed.

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:

  1. High school graduate or GED
  2. Some technical and mechanical training or experience is preferred

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

  1. Work is preformed both indoors and outdoors.
  2. Lifting up to 60 lbs., bending, stooping, climbing, pushing, pulling, reaching, and fine manipulation skills.
